Ra (or Re (Ray) is the ancient Egyptian sun god. He is a major deity synonymous with Egypt. Mainly associated with the midday sun, Ra was primarily worshipped at Heliopolis where he was twinned with the local sun god Atum.
Ra represents heat, light and growth which in a sunny country like Egypt made him a central deity. Ra travelled through the sky
and the Underworld on boats (Mandjet - the boat of a Million Years - mooring boat), Mesektet (evening boat) mirroring the path of the suns’ daily journey. Helped on his journey by other gods, Ra was besieged by Apophis in the form a great serpent who tried to stop Ra’s boat by means of hypnotically staring at it or by eating it. Ra’s identity changed somewhat during the course of Egyptian history as he became associated with other gods, probably signifying a shift in political worth to a particular temple or Pharaoh.
Ra was also combined with many other Deities.
Amun-Ra was a combination of Amun (the hidden one) and Ra. This incarnation was Popular Post Hyksos expulsion seeing the rise in power of Thebes/Waset/ Luxor.
Ra-Horakhty embodies Ra and Horus who was also recognised as the moon.
