OMG! Armed with 2 DX2-66 PC’s and a 1 metre RS-232 serial cable we hosted our first ever LAN Party in the Rookery. For about 3 years we played all-night sessions on a winner stays on basis, needless to say that’s where Mr Too-Much-Free-Time gets his name from as he always stayed on, Duke, Quake, Tie Fighter it didn’t matter (well actually we didn’t bind a protocol to our NIC’s, so TIE never worked lol). We had a great time and it really spurned a life long interest in gaming, especially since it was a good social event as well... Hair raising and BIOS erasing some might say... *wink* Fast forward a few years and we’ve graduated to 10+ gamers, a small network and still the same fun social event, kindly hosted at a secret location in Staffordshire Moorlands. We have played everything from Counter Strike 1.6 to Counter Strike:Source, plus a few others (DoD, Farcry, UT, the Australian Car driving game with no name, Doom 1 & 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Aliens Versus my door Aint workin Predator, Tie Vs forgot to bind IP to the NIC X-Wing, and NFS Porsche 2000). We’ve also had our own web, DHCP, FTP, bit torrent servers, CD’s with patches on in the form of an UberPACK we’ve been there and done all that. We’ve had the EU reserves of crisps, pizzas and other associated junk food, followed by a Hogshead of rocket fuel and caffeine energy drinks. We sacked the chef though cos he was always too busy winning and burnt the pizzas. Lol... Sadly one of our L33K Lanners passed away, so now we play for the Jim Payne Cup (which is actually his golden BB gun) and the reigning team get to keep it between sessions. So here’s to many many more years of L4N Parties and more burnt pizzas, energy drink overloaaaads and starcszzz by yer carsxzzzzzzz......
Way back in the day when computers cost over a grand for a basic model and only came in one colour (Beige), a privileged few got together and decided to link two together.
