Isis Horus Heliopolis
Heliopolis is the Greek name for the Ancient Egyptian city of Inwnw and was the capital of the 13th Nome [an administrative district].
The area has been inhabited since the Predynastic Period [circa 3100 BC], but today it is like most Ancient Cities and has been eroded into a few monuments.
Heliopolis was deconstructed to build medieval Cairo and most information comes from various text sources.
One exciting discovery is that with the application of Remote Satellite Sensing we can uncover the expanse of the ancient city to learn more about it.
Heliopolis was home to Atum and was said to have been the site of the creation of the Ennead.
The word Ennead is derived from Greek meaning a collection or grouping of Nine things. In this
Case there are 9 deities:- Ra, Atum, Shu, Tefnut, Nut & Geb, Osiris, Isis, Set and Nephthys.
During the Armarna period [where the ‘heretic pharaoh’ Akhenaten moved the capital city from Thebes to Armarna and disolved the traditional gods in favour of the one god - [the Aten] Heliopolis was home to a temple called Wetjes Aten [Elevates the Aten]. Most of the monuments of the city were used to make different parts of Cairo over time and the materials used to construct Wetjes Aten are used in the gates to Cairo.
